LinkedIn Post: The Positioning Ladder
Source: Ghost Coast Video — "package what you know and sell it to anyone" (2026-02-01)
Topic: Freelance → consulting positioning
I started writing articles for $40 each.
Not $40 a word. $40 for the whole thing. Some were $5.
The limiting factor was never ability. I could write fast, I could write good, I knew the topics. The limiting factor was how much time it takes to do what a client is asking for. I was trading time for money at the worst possible exchange rate.
What changed it was not getting better at the work. It was getting better at packaging it.
First I specialized. Then I bundled services. Video plus SEO plus a website — sell that as one thing, one price. I was selling packages at $5,000 when I was still doing the exact same work I'd been doing for $40 an article. The work hadn't changed. The framing had.
There's a thing people say about expertise: read five books on a subject and you know more than most people. That's annoying but it's true. Most people read zero books on the subject. They're just doing the thing and hoping it works.
The ladder goes: freelance → specialize → package → consult → teach.
Each step is not about doing different work. It's about convincing people of a different thing about you. That's it. That's the whole game.
If you've been doing the same work for a while and wondering why the rate hasn't moved, the answer is probably not in getting better at the craft.
