LinkedIn Post: Be Obi-Wan, Not Luke

Topic: How consultants and service providers should position themselves

If you do client work, there's a move that will save you from a lot of awkward conversations.

Be Obi-Wan, not Luke Skywalker.

Luke is the hero. The whole story is about Luke. He's the one with the arc, the one who changes, the one the audience is following. If you walk into a client pitch as Luke, you are centering yourself. Your journey, your skills, your story. And the client is standing there thinking: this is not my problem.

Obi-Wan trains the hero. He shows up when needed. He's not trying to be in the story — he's trying to make the story possible.

The reason this matters practically: a person only makes a purchasing decision if they can see their story interacting with your story. Not your story by itself. The overlap.

I've been working with businesses in Atlanta and Albuquerque for a while now — venue owners, restaurants, local service companies — and the single biggest thing I see people get wrong is they show up to a client conversation talking about what they've built. Their portfolio. Their methods. Their process. None of that is wrong, exactly. But it's Luke.

Obi-Wan listens to where the client is stuck. Then he talks about what happens after that problem gets solved.

It's a small shift but it changes the whole dynamic. You're not auditioning. You're being considered.
