The Name Problem Nobody Warns You About

Corpus grounding

Why this works

Naming is the invisible tax on building anything. Brandyn has launched multiple ventures and knows this from experience. The insight is counterintuitive: people think naming is a vanity decision, but it's actually a positioning decision that chews up real time and energy. Most content skips this entirely.

Draft LinkedIn post

You probably didn't budget for this, but naming a new business will take about 30% of your starting mental energy.

Not the logo. Not the website. Just the name.

You'll think of a name you like. It's taken. You'll try variations. All taken or trademarked or pointing to something weird. You'll go broad. Someone's squatting on the domain. You'll go narrow. Now you've painted yourself into a corner before you've done anything.

I've built enough things over the years that I've started to recognize this as its own phase of work. Not planning, not building, not selling — naming. And it takes real cognitive effort to get through it without just giving up and calling the thing something generic.

Here's what I've learned about it.

First, the name matters less than you think once people know what you do. The businesses people love in Atlanta and Albuquerque usually have names that make zero sense on paper. But the reputation accumulated on top of the name is the real asset. Nobody thinks about what "Varasano's" means. They think about the pizza.

Second, the reason it's hard is that you're not just naming a thing — you're trying to telegraph positioning before you've done enough work to know what your positioning is. That's the trap. You're trying to name a story you haven't written yet.

If you're stuck on a name for more than two weeks, that's a signal. Either you don't know enough yet about what the thing actually is, or you're letting the naming process substitute for building.

Pick something directional. You can always adjust. The name that exists is better than the perfect name you haven't shipped.
