There's something I say to people who are in the middle of a career transition and I'll just say it here.

No matter what you're doing, there's no possible way for you to run away from the good things that are coming your way.

I mean that seriously. Not as a comfort line. As an actual claim about how this works.

When you've put in real time doing a thing — when you've gotten legitimately good at something and you've done it at enough different scales to understand it — that doesn't disappear. It's not attached to the company you're at or the contract you lost or the client who went somewhere else. It's attached to you. It's portable.

The anxiety of transition is real. You feel behind. You feel like you're watching other people move faster than you. You feel like the window is closing.

But the thing you've actually built — the knowledge, the relationships, the judgment that comes from having been wrong a dozen times and corrected — that's not going anywhere. That's the thing people are eventually going to pay for.

I came up doing $40 freelance articles and community college web design. I've transitioned out of at least three professional identities since then, some by choice, some by force. Every time, the thing that carried forward was the accumulated work, not the specific job.

You don't need to outrun anything. The window is not closing. If you've done the work, the work is with you.
