LinkedIn Post: Don't Scale Above Your Ability to Actually Do It
Source: NSFW Podcast ep. 125 — "No Vetting, Just Vibes" (Kennedy, Rachel, Brandyn, April discussing the Medicare for All march organizing collapse) Topic: The mistake every organization makes when it scales too fast
I don't need to name the name of the group that was involved in this scandal. If you were to really go back into the archives of history you'd know the specific thing I'm talking about.
I don't need to name the name of the group that was involved in this if you were to go really back into the archives of history, you know the specific group that I'm talking about. But what's really timeless about it is, there is actually a similar group that this just happened to last month.
So this was a national March that had a lot of passion and not a lot of structure and they organized they deputized rather a bunch of local organizers and cities across the country to run satellite events.
No vetting no just vibes. New paragraph
And one of the local deputies turned out to be a nazi. And I don't mean this as a metaphor, I mean this guy had the tattoos and everything he ran one of their local events because the tradition the national organization didn't have any process for knowing who is actually in charge of what, and also. Think a lot of these groups just overestimate their own popularity and they really do think people are just going to come out of the woodwork to run a city-wide event for them.
And I guess that they could have chalked this up to the game, but you know they could have just said hey we're trying to do something ambitious and everybody screws up once in awhile. But instead it was just a lot of conspiracy theories,
We talked about it on the podcast and the takeaway wasn't "dont organize.”
Organizing sucks though. It goes wrong all the time because people are unreliable. If you're in Seattle and you've got a follower in Knoxville who wants to host an event in your name and you don't even know who that person is, why is it so important that you run an event in Knoxville?
And this can imply and every organization or group, because the urge to estimate to overestimate your own popularity is everywhere. New paragraph you can't just assume that your franchise is going to blow everything else out of the water. You have to really think about who's running the operation at the moments that you are not. It's having some knowledge of the people is checking the setup it's you know starting with five franchises before you jump to 50\.
You have to move slow enough that your name still means what you think it means.
