Your peer group will outrank your work ethic.

It sounds unfair because it is. You can be the hardest working person anywhere and still not get past a group of people who aren't invested in the same thing. Family can hold you back. Where you live can hold you back. Being motivated isn't the lever people pretend it is.

You can see it in the lazy rich people. Plenty of them never crammed 10,000 hours into anything. They just never had to fight the people around them.

So the move isn't to try harder alone. It's to get around people who want the same thing, on purpose. In a group it's easier to find people who are interested, easier to get your weaknesses covered, easier to get there without burning out.

Here's the part that stings the most. Your 10,000 hours in whatever you're actually good at, talking, technology, making things, that's worth something to somebody. But it won't carry you past a peer group that isn't invested.

Watch who you're spending your time with. It'll tell you more about where you're headed than your to-do list will.
