LinkedIn Post: The Diamonds Right Before You Quit

Source: /opt/gcv-portfolio/captions/oJIqTFGrE8Y.en.vtt — GCV onboarding talk, ~00:56–01:17

You know the meme. A guy with a pickaxe digging underground, and he stops, turns around, and walks away. The diamonds are right there on the other side of the wall. One more swing. He never finds out.

That's what a lot of us do with the people we recruit.

Think about how much work goes into the top of the funnel. Finding people, approaching them, getting on calls, making the connection. All of that happens before anybody ever says yes. Then they say yes and we have nothing for them. No plan for what happens next. So they drift off and we go start the whole search over.

Onboarding is the first time the people you've been talking to actually talk back to you. It's the big moment you've been digging toward this whole time. It's also where most of us turn around and walk away, one swing short of the diamonds.

I don't think it's laziness. It's that nobody sits down and builds the thing. The video that explains what to expect. The doc for the person who'd rather read than watch. The questionnaire. The way to book the call. The one place they'll keep talking to you after. It's an afternoon of work and almost nobody does it.

Next time you're about to start another round of outreach, look at what happened to the last person who said yes. If you can't name the step after that, you know exactly where the wall is.
