LinkedIn Post: The Blockbuster Moment
Source: /opt/gcv-portfolio/captions/46HFUSLy8_0.en.vtt — GCV partnership/nonprofit talk, ~00:03–01:10 ("every nonprofit right now is like Blockbuster in 2012")
Every nonprofit I meet right now is Blockbuster in 2011.
My partner Kennedy and I spent the 2022 election cycle meeting organization after organization that was fighting to get people to show up. To the ballot box. To events. To become members, to donate. And most of them still had people walking in the door.
Blockbuster still had customers in 2011. That's the part that makes it so hard to see. The end doesn't announce itself. You've still got people coming in, the bills still get paid, and the thing that kills you is already sitting right there on the horizon. The new technology. Everybody's trying to figure out how not to get left behind.
We worked with the ones who got ahead of it, and that put us ahead of the curve too, which is the only reason I can tell you any of this.
If your organization is fine right now, that's exactly when you should be looking hardest at what's coming. Fine is the most dangerous thing a board can be told.
What's on your horizon that you've been too busy to name?
