For the last year or so we've been on a real hell of a journey, and a lot of people just haven't seen us doing it. Constant days of work building the connections, building the tools, making the websites and pages and stuff that makes the whole project go.

A year of work and nobody saw it. Not because it wasn't happening. Because you have to get to a certain level before you're comfortable sharing a thing with people.

We called it the basement. The lab, whatever you want to call it. Making some of this stuff work in private while it was still ugly. Now we're getting on the first floor, and the real question is who wants to be on the first floor of this.

Every business I know has the same invisible year. The launch you saw was standing on top of one. The person who seems to come out of nowhere put in a year you couldn't watch.

So here's the question for anybody running something quiet right now: who gets to see the basement, and when do you start telling people there's a first floor coming?
