There's a line I say to every artist and organizer who comes through, and it isn't "follow your dreams."

"Be your own economy."

Make your own products, your own systems, your own services. Make your own dreams come to life instead of waiting for somebody else to do it with you.

That's aimed at the artists, the activists, the entrepreneurs. People sitting around waiting for a grant, a gig, a gatekeeper to notice them. You can wait a long time that way. The people who build their own thing have a place for the grant to land when it finally shows up.

I built the weekly show that way. Takeover Tuesday. Instead of running around town chasing people all week, we made one public thing at the same time every week and everything funnels into it. The show is a system. I learn to build the process, delegate, network across LinkedIn and Instagram and email, and the system does the work while I go live my life.

You don't need permission to make your own economy. You need a thing you can point to and a time it happens.
